What Should I Expect During an Independent Engagement Ring Consultation?

Most of the guys who reach out to me have the same quite worry underneath their first message:

“I don’t even know if I know enough to have this conversation yet.”

And that’s exactly why I wanted to write this.

Because the number one thing holding people back from getting guidance it’s budget. It’s not the timeline either.

It’s the belief that they need to have more figured out before they ask for help.

You don’t.

And if you’ve been feeling this way, this is definitely for you.

What happens during an independent engagement ring consultation?

An independent engagement ring consultation is a conversation, not a test.

It starts wherever you are in the buying process. Whether you’re just beginning, stuck mid-research, or already looking at something specific.

The goal is to understand your situation, priorities, and what you actually need. From there, I provide clear, unbiased guidance.

There’s no script. No pressure. And nothing you need to have figured out in advance.

First: This Isn’t a Sales Call

Before anything else, you need to know what makes this different from walking into a jewelry store.

In a retail environment, a consultation is part of the sales process.

There’s inventory to move.
There’s sales targets.
There’s techniques designed to keep you in the room and moving toward a decision.

That’s not what this is.

My consultations don’t have inventory attached to it.

I have no commissions.
No incentives to push you toward any particular diamond, retailer, or price point.

My only goal is helping you understand what you’re actually looking at, and making sure you feel genuinely confident before you spend a single dollar.

So How Does It Work?

Most consultations happen virtually over Google Meet, so we can get to know each other while also looking at diamonds and rings together in real time.

For some clients, a phone call makes more sense depending on where they are in the process.

And for clients in Calgary, in person meetings can be an option too.

But regardless of where we meet, the structure of our conversation is always the same:

It starts with where you are. Not where I think you should be.

There’s no checklist of things you need to have done first. Just me understanding where you are right now, and what you actually need.

What “Where You Are” Can Look Like

Because clients come to me at very different stages, no two consultations look exactly the same.

If You’re Just Starting Out

Some people reach out to me before they’ve looked at a single thing.

All they know is that they want to propose, and maybe a rough estimate of how much they want to spend.

But, they have no idea where to begin.

That’s a completely valid place to start.

In this case, we’d talk through priorities:

Together, we build a clear plan so when you do start looking at options, you know what you’re actually looking at.

If You’re Stuck Mid-Research

This is the most common place people find me.

They’ve done some research, read articles, watched videos, and gone down the Reddit threads rabbit hole.

But instead of feeling more confident, they feel more overwhelmed.

At this stage, the goal isn’t more information.

It’s helping you figure out what information actually applies to your situation while removing anything that doesn’t.

And that shift usually happens a lot faster than you’d expect.

If You Already Have Something Specific In Mind

Some clients come to me with a diamond link, a screenshot, or a ring they’re seriously considering buying.

They want to know: “Is this actually a good choice?”

In that case, we’d look at it together.

I’d walk through exactly what I see:

  • How it performs

  • Whether the specs make sense

  • If anything stands out as a concern

  • And give you a clear, honest assessment before you commit to a purchase

Do I Need to Know What I Want Before A Consultation?

No. You don’t need to have a diamond shortlisted, a budget finalized, or a style chosen.

You just need to show up where you actually are.

My consultations are designed to meet you there, not test how prepared you are.

What We Might Actually Look At Together

Depending on where you are in the engagement ring buying process, a consultation might include:

  • Looking at diamond videos side by side and talking through what I’m seeing (light performance, proportions, any concerns).

  • Walking through a grading report and explaining what matters and what doesn’t for your specific situation.

  • Discussing ring construction (not just how something looks, but how it’ll hold up over time).

  • Talking through the lab vs natural diamond decision in the context of your budget and priorities.

  • Reviewing options you’ve already found and giving you an honest and expert second opinion.

  • Or simply having a clear, pressure free conversation about where to start.

There’s no fixed agenda.

The conversation goes where it actually needs to go.

What You Don’t Need to Bring

This is the part I want to be especially clear about.

You don’t need to:

  • Have a diamond picked out

  • Know the 4Cs

  • Have a style figured out

  • Know your partner’s ring size

  • Have a firm budget

  • Have done any research at all

You don’t need to walk in prepared.

You just need to walk in.

Everything else gets figured out together.

What should I bring to an independent engagement ring consultation?

Bring whatever you have: a shortlist, a screenshot, a vague idea, or nothing at all.

If you have inspiration images, a budget range, or questions you’ve been sitting on, those are helpful.

But none of it is required. The consultation starts with your situation, not a checklist.

What People Usually Feel After

I hear some version of the same thing after almost every first consultation:

“I wish I’d done this sooner.”

Not because the process was necessarily overwhelming before, but because the clarity that comes from having someone genuinely on your side, without a sales agenda attached, changes how the whole thing feels.

The anxiety doesn’t disappear because you suddenly know everything about diamonds.
It disappears because you no longer feel like you have to do it all alone.

And that shift, from overwhelmed and uncertain to clear and supported, usually happens during our first conversation.

How This Is Different From Getting a Ring Review

It’s worth clarifying the difference between a full consultation and a ring review, since both are options.

A Ring Review is focused.

  • You have a specific diamond or ring you’re already considering.

  • You want to know if it’s actually worth buying before you commit to it.

  • I go through it and tell you exactly what I see. No consultation required.

An Engagement Ring Guidance consultation is broader.

  • It’s for people who want support through the whole engagement ring buying process:

  • Sourcing, comparing, deciding, and feeling genuinely confident in your final choice.

If you’re not sure which one fits where you are right now, that’s okay. Reach out and we’ll figure it out together.

You Don’t Need to Have it Figured Out First

This is the thing I want to leave you with.

The biggest barrier with getting the help you actually need is the belief that you’re not ready yet.

That you need to research more.
Learn more.
Narrow it down more.

But that’s usually what keeps you stuck longest.

You don’t need to be ready.

You just need to reach out.

Everything else gets sorted from there.
